The Surreal House Exhibition

The Barbican Centre has invited us to inhabit The Surreal House and this is definitely one invite that we’ll take up.
What we’re visiting is a mysterious dwelling infused with subjectivity and desire. We can’t wait to step inside the labyrinth of chambers- designed by acclaimed architects- and experience haunted rooms, delirious forms, blasted architecture and cinematic dreamscapes featuring a host of artists, architects and film makers including Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell and Maya Deren right through to more contemporary figures, among them; Louise Bourgeois, Rebecca Horn, Edward Kienholz and Rem Koolhaas. Architects Build Small Spaces

We can’t wait to check out this creative, new exhibition at the V&A: a haven of relaxation. They have commissioned a group of international architects to build a series of structures throughout the museum which respond to the theme of the 'retreat'.  The starting point for these experimental projects is the idea of a small enclosed space representing an escape from the chaos of urban life to an area for peace, contemplation, shelter or creativity. The exhibition moves away from explaining architecture through drawings and models and instead allows the visitor to experience the architecture itself.

The IDC History Class: Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair 1958

Initially created for Radisson SAS hotel in Copenhagen the chair was designed in a typical Jacobsen style, one where there was no fear of pushing materials to their limit, and often using entirely new materials to make his designs come true.
It is believed to be inspired by Eero Saarinen's "Womb chair", from which it gains some traits. The Egg was (as was the Swan) designed as a couch also - though the actual piece was thought to be a figment of someone's imagination, fed by the existence of the Swan-couch. While the Swan-couch is still in production, only a handful of Egg-couches have ever been made. A few were made for the Radisson Hotel, and a few years back, some were made as a "special edition" couch. The price was quite high, about 400.000 dkr., the equivalent of 60,000 USD. Many fake copies are produced the original still made by Fritz Hansen www.fritzhansen.com.

Sparkling Fendi Glamour

We firmly believe that light is definitely one of the most important and often neglected factors to be considered in any interior scheme: it can give the environment a protagonist role, redefines spaces and objects and can create different environments, themselves enhanced with new colours and transparencies.
To achieve the perfect light for a glamorous scheme we love the entire Fendi collection- in particular the chandeliers with faceted, sparkling crystals, with white or black Swarovski elements, then assembled in series to reflect light in a magic game of contrasts. We can help you in your search to find the best deals on any Fendi product.

Farrow & Ball Wallpaper...

Visiting F&B showroom last week aiming to choose a paint colour, almost made me change my mind. Once I started flicking through their wallpaper samples which I must admit that I never associate with their paint brand, I was so impressed and inspired that I almost decided not to have the room painted. In particular I was struck by the creative Vermicelli based on an 18th Century textile design. I was also happy to learn that they are printed using environmentally friendly water based paints. We can help you decide between paint and wallpaper, to choose the right colours and get you the best price on F&B.

IDC designer of the week: Piero Lissoni

Born in Seregno in1956, Lissoni graduated in architecture in Milan in 1985. The following year he opened his own interior design and architecture studio.
He has worked for many Italian design houses, not only in the field of product design but also in marketing; coordinating the brand image, managing communication campaigns as well as creating showrooms. He has recently been working on numerous projects for private homes and hotels for example in Venice (Monaco & Grand Canal), New York, Zurich, Istanbul and Bangkok. His designs are influenced by fifties and seventies chic and look as if they belong in a film by Frederico Fellini or even by Kubrick. His inspirations include the designs of designers such as the Danish Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm and his sense of keen minimalism is derived from his affinity with the famous Milanese designers that came before him including the heyday of heroes Marco Zanuso, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni, and Vico Magistretti.

The New Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere design for Foscarini

Any time that Foscarini  launches a new lighting range there is considerable excitement and interest in the world of interior design. When that new launch is a Lucidi e Luca Pevere there is even more excitement particularly here at the IDC.
Named Aplomb, according to Foscarini the challenge was create an incredible leap of scale: from large architectural constructions to a little suspension lamp with a thickness of just a few millimetres at its finest point, with the additional challenge of using concrete - a material that is renowned for being inflexible. The challenge has been met with impeccable ‘aplomb’, thanks to the use of special concrete that is particularly fluid when moulding and then creates a material effect that is both rough and, at the same time, elegant.
We can introduce to the best interior designers who will help you to create schemes such as direct, precise lighting on occasional tables, peninsulas and counters, alone or in a multiple compositions. We can also help find you the best deals on Foscarini lighting.

All the world loves a clown by Marcel Wanders for Baccarat

Here is another inventive and fun piece that we love by Dutch designer Marcel Wander from the collection called 'United Crystal Woods’ for French crystal company Baccarat: 'l'ivresse des bois': the ‘drunken woods’ blown crystal decanter with red crystal stopper. Wanders is a self-professed hedonist of great wines and has added some humour to the turned crystal stems by including his seal - the famous clown with the nose that pops up in much of Wanders' collections.
Here it has become a motif for the stems and stopper in baccarat red or clear crystal. Marcel has also designed two carafes, including a decanter.

We will be pleased to find you the best deals on any Baccarat collection.
