In search of the next generation of top designers, the luxury leather-goods firm Bottega Veneta recently presented architecture students at the University of Tokyo with a challenge: Create an article of furniture that can be used by someone seated.
The three winners displayed their prototypes, all variations on a table, at this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.
Kentaro Fujimoto’s design was inspired by Japanese roof tiles; Shima Suzuki’s square, leather-lined tube has sliding parts; and Ayami Takada’s portable table draws on origami shapes.
Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury goods house best known for its leather goods. Founded in 1966, it was purchased in 2001 by Gucci Group, now a part of the French multinational group PPR. Bottega Veneta is headquartered in Vicenza, in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy.
