The Marais Stool - doesn't just look vintage, it is vintage

Designed by Xavier Pauchard in 1934, the Marais Stool doesn't just look vintage — it is vintage. Crafted from sheet steel and unapologetically straight forward, the Marais was long used as a bribe to bars and brasseries by breweries in exchange for carrying their beer, and carries on this tradition by holding court in the secret bar inside Oakley's massive, steampunk-inspired headquarters.

A great idea for adding some industrial flair to your home bar

If you are in Korea, according to Wallpaper Magazine, you can’t miss the Yoshioka exhibition.

The Japanese designer’s work often has an otherworldly appeal like his luminescent installation for Kartell during this year's Salone del Mobile, his swirling, 'Tornado' creation for Design Miami in 2007 and his latest nine-metre-tall window of 500 crystal prisms is typically awe-inspiring. Diesel and Foscarini lighting

A new volcanic ash cloud is now coming from Italy. As we all know, Diesel was the latest fashion brand to launch its home line. Together with Foscarini they designed the amazing Rock, an artistic interpretation of a split volcanic rock, that reveals clear, sparkling crystal inside.

It is a hanging lamp with a captivating form, dark-coloured and flecked with golden speckles. There is a strong contrast between the dark, external surface that is rough to the touch and the casually sculpted and the shiny, iridescent interior with its paler tones. When illuminated, the asymmetrical interior surface creates a dramatic visual effect Bottom of Form.

Dedon Summer

We love all the outside furniture collection from Dedon, specially the already classical Obelisk above, created by the great Dutch designer Frank Lighthart. It shows how an impressive work of art can be made out of four chairs and a table: modular, powerful, and surprisingly versatile.

Together, OBELISK gives the impression of a long, spreading stone, and stands out like a work of art in any setting. When the six-piece sculpture is taken apart, the precisely thought out design concept behind the art work becomes clear.

Lighthart studied product development at the Henry Vandevelde-Institute at the academy of Antwerp in Belgium and design at the University of Technology in Delft for his outstanding work, he was awarded with several prestigious design awards, such as Design Plus Award, Red Dot design Award, and BIDA Award for outstanding design.

We can give you many other ideas and advice about outside furniture and fabrics and also find you the best deals.

Marcel Wanders collection for Baccarat

As chic and poetic as it gets! We are very excited about this creative and glamorous brand new  collection . Wanders, hedonist designer and poet, imbued from childhood with his Dutch roots has been the high priest of the brazen and offbeat style of early 21st-century design, ever since the Dutch school emerged as a seminal influence.

Baccarat has also joined in, claiming Marcel Wanders as one of its own, for his whimsical inspiration drawn straight from the Arts Décoratifs.  Channeling the natural world, Marcel Wanders dreamed up “United Crystal Woods” for Baccarat, a collection bringing together several facets of the company: “La Fôret des Songes,” multipurpose candle jars decorated with a lace pattern etched to various thickness; “Les Rois de la Fôret,” monumental cut vases of polished metal or marble bases; “L’Ivresse des Bois,” a set of utterly elegant wine glasses and carafes. And finally, the pinnacle of this imaginary forest, “L’Esprit des Bois,” an improbable family of deer and stags, made of polished stainless steel and wood encased in etched crystal; in candlelight, these poetic, graceful shapes look like dreams come to life.

We will be delighted to help you search for the best deals on this collection, available from April.

IDC Designer of the Week: Tom Dixon

The talented Mr. Dixon
Tom Dixon, curator, manufacturer, concept developer and icon. The British designer was actually born in Tunisia but moved to the United Kingdom at the age of four. He began designing furniture in his early 20s when, after being injured in a motorcycle accident, he used his welding skills learned while repairing his motorcycle to create a variety of objects - including the S-Bend chair, that was discovered later by Italian furniture maker Cappellini. The S-Bend chair has been manufactured since 1992 together with his Kitchen Chair, the Bird chaise longue, and the Bird 2 chair.
He is also known for giving away hundreds of lights to the British public from Trafalgar Square in 2007. Items of his work form part of the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Design Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Moma in New York, the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Vitra Museum, Basle, Switzerland.

Eco Friendly Farrow & Ball

We are glad to see the wonderful example from companies like Farrow & Ball researching and developing new eco-friendly products. By significantly reducing the solvent in their products, over 90% of paint within the Farrow & Ball range is now classified as having either a low, minimal or zero* VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content. VOCs are present in many household products. In paint the VOCs are solvents, such as white spirit, which evaporate into the atmosphere while paint is drying. These VOCs pollute the environment and potentially have a detrimental effect on health.

We can help you chose the perfect eco friendly color, get you the best deals on F&B paint and put you in touch with wonderful designers who will be glad to supply you with suggestions and even a potentially free consultation.

IDC History Class - The PH Artichoke lamp (1958)

The extraordinary PH Artichoke Pendant is a designer Light fixture manufactured by Louis Poulsen and designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958.

The design centers on a 360-degree glare-free light created by 72 leaves, that resemble an artichoke. The light source or bulb cannot be directly viewed, the light is directed and reflected upon the leaves until it illuminates the entire artichoke. A chrome inner diffuser also assists in the proper, even reflection of the light source. The metal halide sources are used in the largest of the Artichoke fixtures.

For years, a number of companies have tried to replicate the Artichoke fixture, only a handful have made a replica that is at all geometrically and cosmetically similar. The original still made by Louis Poulsen from Denmark.

We can help you in your search for the best prices on any designer product.

Pablo Picasso in Liverpool for summer!

We are already planning a daytrip to Tate Liverpool, they are bringing together over 150 works by Picasso from across the world from 21 May to 30 August 2010.

The exhibition promises to reveal a fascinating new insight into the artist's life as a tireless political activist and campaigner for peace, challenging the widely held view of the artist as creative genius, playboy and compulsive extrovert.

This is the first exhibition to explore the post-War period of the artist's life in depth, and will reflect a new Picasso for a new time. The exhibition provides a timely look at Picasso's work in the Cold War era and how the artist transcended the ideological and aesthetic oppositions of East and West.

CuldeSac Collective Design

The amazing and elegant chair above can look great in any corner of the house. Contemporary but discrete, slim and elegant, light and comfortable - it was named 'Whisper' by CuldeSac studio.

The Valencia based design collective is actually more than a design studio as they prefer to call themselves a “creative space”, CuldeSac is an open dynamic space where creative people from different fields (electronics, furniture, lighting, painting, etc.) meet and join forces to develop shared projects under one common denominator: being multidisciplinary.

The strength of the studio is grounded in the interface between the four core members – Francisco Pons, Alberto Martinez, Pepe Garcia and Pilar Roger -- and other creative people from various disciplines coming from Spain and the rest of the world who join the team in meeting specific needs and demands of each individual project.

We will be glad to help you choose the right furniture for your space and search for the best deals on your purchase.

‘One of the best things in life’. You’ll never guess

“One of the best things in life is….. choosing new furniture.”* Really? Not to put too fine a point on it but actually I think I’d be a bit concerned for any friends or colleagues at the IDC who came out with anything like that despite their interest in and our passion for interior design.  We would go so far to say it is extremely important to get sound independent, professional advice when choosing new furniture so that it proves to be a purchase of which you can be justifiably proud as well as one of the best decisions you make.

We can help you not only get suitable advice but also suggest sources for what you’re looking for and then of course broker the deal so that you may be able to buy your furniture at a better price than you would otherwise. And that applies also to soft furnishing, lighting, decorative objects.

Interior Design vs. Interior Decoration

At the IDC, we try our utmost to get things right and certainly we’re delighted that we’ve already got some very satisfied members.

However one thing that has been brought to our attention is the issue of whether we should really be called the Interior Decoration Club instead of the Interior Design Club

Design or Decoration? We checked on the dictionary definition. We found that interior design is the trade of planning the layout and furnishings of an architectural interior while interior decoration is the planning and execution of the layout, decoration, and furnishing of an architectural interior.

Clear then. The difference seems to lie in the execution of the planning. Except that the definition, tellingly, then went on to say “Also called interior design.” Hmmm.

Actually, whatever your interpretation of interior design or interior decoration, contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

IDC Designer of the Week: Yuni Ahn

Yuni Ahn was born in South Korea and moved to England in 1961.

She has decorated the Stella Mc Cartney shops in New York, London and Los Angeles; worked with Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance at the interior design of the Sanderens restaurant in Paris; and decorated the interiors of the Sketch restaurant in London and the Tad’s shop in Milan, as well as also designing furniture for Ceccoti.

She has a very interesting touch and combines a contemporary western soul with great care for details.

Travelling with Philippe Starck

In 1988 Philippe Starck was commissioned by famed nightclub impresario Ian Schrager, former co-owner of Studio 54, to refit the Royalton Hotel on New York's West 44th Street. It was a design moment that changed the hotel industry and the first boutique hotel was born.

Boutique hotels, where design is an important factor, became the industry buzz.

Years later, Philippe Starck used wood, glass and marble as core materials in his design for the Hotel Fasano in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 92 room hotel overlooking Ipanema beach enjoys a spirit of sophisticated casualness, with many furnishings in the vein of 1950s and ’60s Brazilian design, including pieces by Studio Branco&Preto, Sergio Rodrigues and exclusive creations by Philippe Starck himself.
